Real Experience. Real Solutions.

Cassidy Thompson is the founder of Safer Spaces Collaborative and a community leader whose work is informed by both professional expertise and lived experience navigating homelessness and building a path to long-term recovery from substance use disorder.

Having lived experience and later working within the systems that support individuals experiencing housing instability, healthcare barriers, and substance use challenges, Cassidy brings a rare perspective that bridges lived experience and program leadership.

Over the course of this work, Cassidy has helped develop and strengthen community programs, secure and manage grant funding, and support organizations in building sustainable services that better meet the needs of the communities they serve.

This perspective informs Cassidy’s approach to training, program development, grant support, and consultation through Safer Spaces Collaborative. Cassidy believes that the strongest programs are built in partnership with the communities they serve and grounded in dignity, safety, and belonging.

Our Approach

At Safer Spaces Collaborative, our work is grounded in values that prioritize dignity, collaboration, and practical solutions that strengthen communities.

Trauma Informed Practice

We recognize that many individuals interacting with community services have experienced trauma, systemic barriers, or marginalization. Our approach prioritizes safety, trust, choice, and empowerment while encouraging organizations to design services that recognize the whole person rather than just the challenges they are facing. By supporting person-centered care models, we help organizations create environments where individuals are treated with dignity, respected as experts in their own lives.

Expertise Informed by Lived Experience

Our work is shaped by both professional expertise and lived experience navigating the systems that support individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorder, and other complex challenges. Safer Spaces Collaborative encourages organizations to actively involve the voices of the individuals and communities they serve in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs. When people who are directly impacted by services have a meaningful role in shaping those services, organizations are better able to design solutions that address real needs, reduce barriers, and foster stronger community trust.

Community-Centered Collaboration

We believe that the most effective programs are created with communities, not just for them. Working together to serve individuals with complex barriers is important to any successful organization. Healthy communities depend on strong relationships between organizations, service providers, and the people they serve. Our approach incorporates restorative practices that help strengthen partnerships, address conflict in constructive ways, and rebuild trust where gaps may exist. By encouraging open dialogue and collaborative problem-solving, we help organizations and community partners work together more effectively toward shared goals.

Practical Support and Continued Guidance

Our work does not end with a training or consultation. Safer Spaces Collaborative emphasizes ongoing collaboration by providing follow-up support, check-ins, and continued guidance as organizations implement new strategies or programs. This approach allows organizations to ask questions, address challenges, and refine their work over time, helping ensure that new practices are not only introduced but successfully sustained.
